HEALTHCARE
Ensure that everyone in the district have access to quality healthcare assistance, especially low income families and young adults.
A recent study from the Department of Heath found that the Bronx is the borough with the highest death rate from AIDS, due mostly to lack of testing and information. I will bring more resources to educate people in our district about the importance of protective sex and getting HIV tested, and bring the resources to make this test available to all. I will work in conjunction with established AIDS organizations to implement programs that have worked elsewhere solutions in the Bronx.
Asthma is a big concern in our borough and the cause of many absences in school. We will work to reduce the pollution in our district, a major cause to asthma. We will also bring resources to bring awareness on how our families can become environmentally responsible to reduce air pollution.
Approximately 40% of the borough’s elementary school students are obese or overweight. National, state and city health officials agree that physical activity is critical to maintain good health and prevent or treat obesity. We will ensure that the Department of Education’s budget includes appropriate funding to upgrade or create adequate gym and recreation spaces in all 14th districts schools.
